This piece is part of my fine art collection, with a theme centred around phobias. This is the third of four pieces showcased on my portfolio.
This is an ink portrait of my nan exploring the psychological impact of aging and mortality fears. While her features show signs of aging her eyes remain warm and full of life, which confronts the viewers with anxieties about their soul being limited by the age of their body. I used fineliner pen to create detailed, realistic facial features that emphasize every wrinkle and age mark, making the aging process plainly visible. The incorporation of newspaper text collaged across portions of the face suggests how identity can become fragmented or lost over time, reflecting fears of dementia or losing one's sense of self. Water applied over the fineliner creates bleeding and dripping effects, creating a sense of dissolution and decay that mirrors gerascophobia - fear of aging. Using this mixed media approach, I've created a powerful visual representation of how aging-related phobias can distort our perception of ourselves.
